I had not realised 'Check point Charlie' was even still there - thought it was dismantled along with the Berlin wall. Does it actually serve a purpose now other than historical interest?

Well its got a McDonalds. and a souvenir shop.

It is there as a tourist attraction in reality. You can pay to have a photo taken by the actors acting as guards.

It's hard to imagine the amount of 'swaps' that went on over the years.

I passed through it on my way to Prague and Budapest when it was a REAL border crossing check-point way back in the 70s.

I went to Berlin in 1970, yes, we were taken through with our party on a coach, but when I travelled east alone went underground which was quicker and easier. (I was surprised how easy, after the 4 hour wait at the DDR border in the snow.)
