your first job

What was your first job ,and did you like it ? I left school at 15, with no formal qualifications,my Dad didnt like the idea of me going into a shop ,he wanted me to become a typist, but I hated the thought of being in a ' stuffy ' office all day, so my Mum suggested we try a big photographic firm near us,they only had a vacancy for help in their executive restaurants kitchen,I agreed to try it but hated it and left as soon as my trial month was over. Years later I went into a shop [ woolworths ] and loved it

Re: your first job

My first job was at 12 when I started cleaning offices with my Mum, then at 15 I left school and worked in a Convent for a couple of years, I used to cook breakfast for the sisters and then wash up and go home to return later in the afternoon to do their suppers and clear up ready for next day.

Office junior, doing typing! And making the drinks for my colleagues. I only had 3 + the manager, very small office, and I enjoyed it.

About a year or so later I took a secretarial course with another firm, stayed with them for just 9 weeks after completing the 6 month course, and returned to the original company in a new position as shorthand typist. Loved it cos it was 5 minute walk from home.

Re: your first job

Same here hated school and left at 15 yrs old. Took out an apprenticeship in electro/mechanical engineering and got an ONC. Found working on building sites in winter was too cold so packed it in. Then went on to making minature fuel pump motors for Concorde and TV cameras etc etc. then worked for BT for over 20 yrs as a switchboard fitter, took early vol and bought the kennels 20 years approx until we retired

Re: your first job

Car radios in the Fifties were always breaking down, so I had a Saturday job repairing them with a man who did car electrics, in a hut at a local garage. Even in the late Fifties there were sets that had auto search and tuning

Re: your first job

I left school at Christmas time 1952 two weeks after my 15th birthday. I started my apprenticeship as an agricultural blacksmith after the new year. Much of the work was converting horse drawn implements to tractor. We still had some Clydesdales which needed shoeing.

Re: your first job

My first job was at a racing stable. I lasted 3 weeks. Got run off with by a race horse, thrown by another one & got caught in a stable with a stable lad.
They sent me home.

I then went to work in a riding stable & stayed there 5 years.
