I agree with you. It sure seems complicated, but that is what makes me think it is very simple. 36 small dogs.

Re: 36 small dogs

I can work this out in my head but I don't know if I can explain it properly.

OK, it says there are 36 MORE small than large, not that there are 36 small. Which means there are a minimum of 36 small dogs.

To work out how many of each you need to find the mid way point while ensuring 36 is the minimum for small dogs, you minus 36 from 49 which gives 13.

That 13 is then split equally between the small and large dogs, which gives you 6.5 dogs to each side.

So the answer is....Large dogs 6.5....small dogs 36 + 6.5 = 42.5

But without knowing 36 was the wrong answer I wouldn't have worked it out correctly either

Me either!

I think it's a bit of a trick question, I remember having something similar for maths homework once and I had no idea how to work it out but fortunately the boyfriend at the time was a year above me at school and a bit of a maths genius.

I could sort of see what the question was but there's no way I could have worked that out. Very difficult for a seven year old especially with the half a dog conundrum.

It said in the article that it was worded wrong. I think a vital piece of info was missing as in....find the median/mean/average, as I can't see why you should have to divide 13 by 2, but maybe that's me.

As the question is worded the answer could be anything between 36 (meaning 13 large dogs) and 49 (meaning 0 large dogs)

And what about medium dogs then? Maybe that's where the half comes in
