What a surprise.

My Uncle/FiL is watching a programme about railways during WW1 presented by Michael Portillo.

They have just shown a bridge that was blown up by Belgium saboteurs on the instruction of their King in an attempt to slow down the advance of the German Army.

I have a postcard of that very same bridge. It is in a collection of other picture postcards in a family album entitled A Souvenir of the Great War.

Yer Tis

Many postcards like this one were bought by family members who fought in that terrible conflict and brought back home unused.
There are also a few that were written on and posted back. One shows a group of soldiers including my Great Uncle Sam that was taken when they came "out of the line" and then posted home. It is dated Aug 19, 1916 and sent to my Great Uncle's sister, my dear old Granny. It is very moving.

Anyway, it was such a surprise to see a picture on the telly that is the exact same as one that has been in my family since the war ended.

Re: What a surprise.

It is amazing when that happens, some tragedies all our families have seen during wars, yet we still do it
