The Falkirk wheel

This structure links the Union canal from Edinburgh and the Forth and Clyde canal, there's a difference in height between the two as you can see, the Union is the upper one.

The barges sail into the cradle then either get lowered down or raised complete with water of course.

The energy required to do this is the same as you use to boil a kettle of water.

Visitors from all over the world stand in amazement at our Scottish engineering expertise.

Oh that is one place I really want to visit! I see it advertised occasionally on telly. Looks brilliant.

Those are really lovely photos of it, Nero

Re: The Falkirk wheel

The late Fred Dibnah gave it his seal of approval on a TV show last night, . . it's the only one in the world, the total weight transported including water and barge is 600 tons, he also said Falkirk was the birth place of steam, Carron Iron Works made the first steam engine to go into a ship, a replica of which is moored at the wheel basin, her name is the Charlotte Dundas, there's a street with the same name nearby.

Re: The Falkirk wheel

We were there last year and went up on the cradle to the top level which was fine. Coming back, however was bit disconcerting - if you sit at front of boat you are 'sailing' into the sky.

Great experience.
