Re: Another scandal

Getting back to the original post - I hope Laws does end up in the Courts over this. To use his sexual orientation as a plausible reason and an excuse for doing something dishonest holds no water in my book - it is fraud and thats that. This issue should have nothing to do with what his sexual preference is - I am not worried about that at all. A politician is a public servant when all is said and done and if we cannot have faith in anything they say or do then everyone is the poorer. Climbing down off my soapbox now.

Re: Another scandal

Homo relates to all humans and recent descendants-so homo this and that could be acceptable?

Taking this logic to the camp humour of Julian and Sandy from Round the Horne could Homoerectus be `Bona`?

I agree - they have to treat it the same regardless of the sexuality involved.

Re: Another scandal

Didn't take long for the cracks to appear. Bet there is more than Laws doing the same thing. Yet they all blasted others in the Labour Party for similar dishonesty!

If they have laws out (no pun intended there) for "Joe Bloggs" claiming benefits unlawfully and they are given jail sentences, then the MPs, Cabinet Members, no matter the party they belong to, should be given jail sentences! What's good for the goose is good for the gander!

Re: Another scandal

Laws has resigned! Wonder if he will stand down as an MP as well.

At least he didn't try to deny it, or anything like that.

But Azz surely if all people from that country refer to each other as 'Pakis' it must be OK. I've worked alongside many people from Pakistan in Saudi Arabia, they all refer to each other as 'Pakis' it's an accepted abbreviation in ex-pat Pakistanis communitys where ever I've worked so why should England be any different

It is even used in business letters and memos, I can recall one memo sent to me asking me to go to the 'Paki' camp at mile 13 on the Dhaman road, (The memo was signed by my boss a Turk, am I allowed to abbreviate Turkish men that way) when I arrived I showed the memo to the Pakistani gate guard (As my authority to enter) He read it and directed me to the building I needed to go to. He didn't raise his hands in the air and start shouting 'This is unnacceptable I won't let you in'

The other abbreviation is maybe more suspect, personally I don't like any of the terms used to describe such people so I generally avoid talking about them for fear of upsetting someone.

But it's your site, you can make what rules you like, notice that I have tried to use Pakistani when it is me talking and I have used inverted commas to highlight that it's not me talking when I write 'Paki' I hope that makes sense (The grammer bit) as to the rules, well if you've never worked among Pakistani people you likely don't know what they call each other, it's quite often not as polite as what I call them

Edited to add:-
All this PC business is doing my head in, surely if there's any hate or racial slur it's self evident in the context of the complete sentence, paragraph, or article as a whole or in the tone of someones voice when talking. More & more I'm thinking I don't want to participate in discussions with humans who are so 'picky' about things that are really of no significance, please stop the world I want to get off

Goodness . . . what have I started ? . . . . the word was an abbreviation, nothing more . . . if homosexuals of either sex want to love each other in private that's up to them . . . Laws tried to get away with the fraudulent claims and was caught . . . I have no doubt in my mind if the story hadn't come to light he'd have stayed quiet . . . all his pals yesterday saying he's an honourable man are a load of guff IMO.

Digressing from the OP . . . I'm Scottish . . also known as a Scottie, Jock, or Haggis basher, or even worse . . . I take no offence because they're only words . . . it saddens me to see people taking offence nowadays at the slightest thing regarding their origins or sexual preferences. . . we have become so PC it's become a nightmare . . . it's become so bad you're afraid to look at a coloured person in the street in case you are accused of racialism . . I'm no bigot but the civil rights and PC people are making things worse.

Good post

Remember years ago when the IRA S/F leader Gerry Adams refered to us lot as Brits in a sneering tone and got others to do the same (American poltics).

At the time Colin Wellend recived an OSCAR/Emmey?? and warned in his exceptance speech "That the Brits are coming"

Adams never use that term again.

Paki is not racist nor is it insulting, to most people including Asians its only people wanting to stir up race hatered that make out it is.

When the World Cup starts I will fly the flag of St George on my motor as I did on St Georges day, 10 years ago I would have being labled as a racist.

Hi Nero, good to see you!!

Hate to start on a negative note but if we mentioned 'coloured person' in my country it would be a real 'no no' so our cultural differences come into it as well. It's ' black' here. And with regards to the other that was brought up 'gay' here.

Re: Another scandal

PC can be a state of mind-often used by idiots?

I came from an academic background into the civil service.

I wrote a paper about reasons why ethnic minority kids did not take up the various programmes then on offer.

I had it checked by the `leaders` of ethnic communities and they all said it was spot on-I was well used to peer review and would never send out something without it.

But I was hauled over the coals by my (stupid, incompetent boss) because my summary included a quote from a chap who said "There just aren`t enough of us coloured guys"

Coloured??!!! -The term is black and you should have said that.

I just replied-I don`t miss quote-that`s not the way I do things
