Re: Price of fish and chips!

Another one for Haddock here, I think it is a 'Northern thing' with Southerners preferring cod.

Years ago when I was very young used to go to the cinema in Ashbourne (Derbyshire) a Mrs Bright used to make fish and chips in her kitchen in a little house in the town square They were served through a window and delicious

Must be something about English chippies, here in the valleys we get huge portions of fish (cooked to order, none of this sitting around going cold and soggy business) and as for the chips. could feed a family of four on the portions we get for £1.50.

Re: Price of fish and chips!

When we visit Whitby we always have a sit down lunch in a fish and chip cafe just across from the Co-op on the harbour. The OAP special is fish and chips with mushy peas, a cup of tea and bread and butter all for around £7.00 apiece. Excellent value and top quality, never fails...

Re: Price of fish and chips!

Years ago Up North especially Lancashire, Fish and Chips was the very first 'Take Away.'

Their used to be a Chip Shop on every Street, sometimes two on a long street.
Many families ate them every day apart from closing day.

Catholics always ate them on Friday and they were delicious, chemical free.
You took our own china basin for Fish Chips and Mushy Peas with salt and vinegar on.or they were wrapped in the Daily papers.

Later the progressed to Chicken Sausage, Fagots, etc, but Fish was always favourite.

Re: Price of fish and chips!

The Funky Fish shop at the top of my road charges about £6.50 for a large fish and chips. Sometimes I'll add a sausage, mushy peas and a can of Fanta. It's still less than £9. I eat fish and chips about once every couple of months, usually after a good boozy session on a Saturday evening. Rounds off the day nicely. Yummy.
We don't get ripped off up north tha knows!

Top tip Floydy, don't pour Fanta on your Fish and Chips.
